震災１週間前の３月４日、茨城県鹿嶋市の海岸で、打ち上げられた小型クジラ５４頭が発見された。同県大洗水族館（大洗町）によると、体長２～３メートルのカズハゴンドウで、同館の島田正幸・海獣展示課長は「遠浅の海に迷い込み砂浜に乗り上げたのでは」と推測するが、地震との関係はわからないという。

　ただ、同様の現象は、今年２月のニュージーランド大地震の前にも確認されている。現地報道によると、同国南西部の島で地震の数日前、１０７頭のゴンドウクジラが乗り上げた。
