ダウン症は決して遺伝ではないし、妊娠期間中に不規則な生活をしたり、胎児に愛情を注がなかったりした結果ではない。むしろ、その逆である。

母体を良い環境にするためには、母親が健康に細心の注意を払い、栄養をしっかり摂ったり、アルコールやタバコの煙に注意したり、そういったことを飽きることなく、約１０ヶ月のあいだ続けなければいけない。父親や周りの人の協力も不可欠である。妊娠期間中、母親や父親がお腹の中の子を凄く大切にしてあげたからこそ、ダウン症の子は流産せずに生まれてくることができるのだ。

ダウン症児は、母の体の様子から愛情や温かさを感じて、

「このお母さんなら、この家族なら、こんなに素敵な環境を用意してくれる人たちなら、ボクは生まれてもちゃんと育ててもらえるんじゃないだろうか」

そんな風に考えているかもしれない。というと、ただのファンタジーだと笑われるかもしれないが、そう思いたい。
